In a warm Ballycran on Sunday last, our Senior Hurlers played Down. Our round 1 win over London proved to be crucial as these final round games determined the fate of the teams for 2027.
Kevin O’Brien was faced with the challenge of missing his usual faces in the starting 15 line up due to injuries over the last 5 weeks. However, the players he selected done our county proud and stepped up to the mark, many of them in their first year as Lake County Senior Hurlers.
We played with the wind for the first half, but unfortunately didn’t make enough use of it, trailing 1-11 to 0-11 at the break.
The second half proved to be a game which ebbed and flowed, until the 51st minute, until Down pulled away going 1-18 to 0-15 up. Jack Gillen found the back of the net on the 71st minute which left 8 between the sides. Final score Westmeath 1-18, Down 1-28.
We would like to sincerely thank Kevin O’Brien and his backroom team for their tremendous work with this years squad. They have been faced with many challenges and injuries over the year, with a new young panel. They retained their Division 2 and Joe McDonagh Cup status. We are very proud of this young panel and know the future is bright for our intercounty hurling scene.
