Celtic Challenge Corn Jerome O’Leary Quarter Final

Westmeath produced a very impressive performance last Saturday in Clonkill to qualify for the Corn Jerome O’Leary Semi Final. The home side, unlucky to lose out on a top two finish in the group stage, controlled proceedings from the beginning against the Royal County and showed a clinical edge to build up a strong lead in the first half that never looked threatened.
Westmeath will be in semi final action on Saturday 23rd May, with Roscommon, Kildare and Armagh all possible opponents.
U15 Hurling Hibernia Cup Round 2
Westmeath 2-16 Down 6-13
Mergon Park in Castlepollard played host to the U15 hurlers’ 2nd round Hibernia Cup game last Saturday. In an exciting game, the Mourne men’s ability to find the net proved the difference, although the Westmeath lads will be encouraged by an improved performance from the opening round clash with Laois, with all 26 players seeing game time.
The Westmeath lads will have no time to rest on their laurels, as they play host to a refixed game with Limerick this coming Saturday. The game will take place at a Westmeath venue, which at the time of writing had yet to be confirmed. Please check Westmeath GAA social media channels for information on this during the week.
Football Development Squads
All football squads were busy preparing last Saturday for their games this coming weekend. The U16 footballers took on Cavan in a challenge game in Clonmellon in preparation for their Ted Webb Round 2 clash this Saturday at home to Laois. Both teams won their opening games in the competition and a keen contest is set to ensure, with the game in Maryland set to throw in at 12:00.
Both U15 football teams will travel to Wicklow to take on the Garden County in both the Dermot Earley Cup and the Humphrey Kelliher Cup. This will be Westmeath’s opening game in both competitions, and with both Wicklow teams having chalked one win already, both games will be a good test for each Westmeath team.
The U14 footballers will have the comfort of home games, as they will host Cork in Caulry GAA. Two Westmeath teams will take on two rebel county outfits concurrently, with the games starting at 1:00.
Go Games
The programme of Go Games continued at the weekend with a series of football blitzes taking place at U8 and U10 levels on Saturday morning. The coming weekend sees another round of hurling blitzes taking place across the county on Saturday morning. Clonkill and Cullion U10 hurlers provided the half-time entertainment at last Saturday’s Joe McDonagh Cup game between Westmeath and Laois, with 40 players representing both clubs.
Primary Teacher Gaelic Games Education Course
Athlone Education Centre, in conjunction with Westmeath GAA, is running a Summer Course for Primary School teachers entitled “Leading Gaelic Games in Primary Schools”. The course will take a blended learning approach, with two days in person in St. Joseph’s SS Rochfortbridge and three days online. The course will focus on developing physical literacy and movement skills, developing coaching programmes and integrating Gaelic Games into a PE Curriculum.
