Heartbreak in Wexford Park for our footballers!

In the biggest game of the Westmeath senior team’s year to date, promotion was in within reaching distance in Chadwick’s Wexford Park.

McHugh’s men showed great resilience throughout the game, keeping the scoreboard ticking over to ensure they stayed on top. Scores from Matthew Whittaker and Sam McCartan meant the side were leading at the break 10 points to 5.

Within the final minutes of the game,two two-pointer frees from their goalie Brooks and a Rossiter free brought the sides back to 2 points, while our travelling supporters eagerly awaited the hooter, we did well to maintain the ball and run down the clock. Within the last 30 seconds, the ball broke and ultimately so did Westmeath hearts as Sean Ryan pulled on a loose ball in the square and victory was Wexford’s.

We remain in Division 3 for 2027 and look forward now to our opening Leinster Championship game v Longford in Longford on April 12th.
