Armagh vs Westmeath

Our U16 hurlers kept up their busy schedule last Saturday, continuing their winning run in a keenly contested affair in Dunganny. In a tit for tat affair, neither side managed to open a substantial gap until Westmeath hit 1-3 with 10 minutes remaining to gain a foothold. A late Meath goal brought the game back into the balance but the Lake County team held out to win by 4 points. Westmeath filtered a few players from the minor hurlers back into the team for the game and still managed to give all players game time.

The majority of the group now face into a Celtic Challenge final this coming Saturday, taking on Armagh in the Corn Jerome O’Leary Final. Armagh will be represented by their minor hurling team and qualified for the final by virtue of a 2-point win over Roscommon. With Westmeath having defeated the Rossies by 3 points in the group stage of the competition, both teams have shown a similar form line and a tight game is set to ensue. Throw in for the game is 12:00 in Abbotstown and everyone in Westmeath GAA wishes the best of luck to the players and mentors on Saturday.

Westmeath travelled to O’Toole Park in Crumlin last Saturday to take on Dublin in the second round of the John Doyle Cup. The first half saw Westmeath build a 5-point advantage to lead by 1-11 to 1-6 at the interval and on the resumption the Lake County took over in the middle third to stretch the lead and win by 2-20 to 1-12. All 23 players saw action in the game, whilst the Hibernia Cup panelists also got a training session under their belts to continue their development.

Well to all players and mentors on a good day out. The team will play Limerick in round 3 on Saturday 4^th July, with Westmeath having home advantage.

Our U14 hurlers were split in locations on Saturday. One team travelled to the Faithful Fields and took part in a blitz with Laois and Offaly. The other team made a longer trip to Enniscorthy, taking on Wexford in Bellefield.

Our U16 footballers travelled to Sligo to take on Donegal in a challenge match, whilst the U15 and U14 footballers trained in Rosemount.

The programme of Go Games continued at the weekend with a series of hurling blitzes taking place at U8 and U10 levels on Saturday morning. The U10 hurlers of the county will get their chance to play in TEG Cusack Park this coming week, as a set of Supergames take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Many thanks to our staff for organising these games and to clubs for sending the players in.

Our staff have been busy running blitzes for 1^st , 2^nd  and 3^rd class students over the last few weeks also, with a number of clubs hosting a cluster of local primary schools.
