This Sunday will be the 6th occasion Westmeath have competed in a Leinster Senior Football Final, with 2004 the standalone victory in Leinster’s premier football competition.
Powered by many of the All Ireland Junior winners of 1929, the county’s first final was 1931, which like this year, saw both quarter final and semi final victories in Tullamore. In 1949, an attendance of 37,102 in Croke Park watched on as the men in maroon lost out to Meath 4-05 to 0-06.
A 55-year gap ensued to the next final appearance but 2004 needs no introduction as the Delaney Cup made its way to Westmeath for the first time ever following a replay victory over Laois.
2015 & 2016: back to back finals brought the county together again, but unfortunately the Delaney Cup didn’t return to the Lake County as Sunday’s opponents held the upper hand.
Generations have passed, but the goal is still the same. Can 2026 bring back the glory days of 2004? 🇱🇻
