Leinster Quarter Final Awaits McHugh’s Men

In Glennon Bros. Pearse Park on Sunday, our senior footballers travelled to play their opening round of the Leinster Championship. After 4 years of not making it past the opening round,  supporters hoped this year, under new manager Mark McHugh, things would be different and thankfully their hopes came to fruition!

For the opening 10 minutes, the sides exchanged scores and it was anybody’s game to win. When Brandon Kelly scored his second goal of the afternoon on the 15th minute mark, Westmeath’s confidence grew and they kept the scoreboard ticking over. Luke Loughlin scored 2 fantastic first half goals and Shane Corcoran also raising the green flag in the opening half meant the Lake County men cruised to half time where the scoreboard read Westmeath 5-09 to Longford’s 1-08.

Ray Connellan’s 2 pointer in the open seconds of the second half eased supporters minds and Westmeath looked to be fully in control of this game.

To Longford’s credit, they kicked 6 two-pointers and displayed lots of potential going forward.

Substitutes Conor Dillon (0-03), Adam Treanor, Tom Molloy (0-02), Robbie Forde and Danny McCartan (0-01) all made an impact when they came on making McHugh and his management team’s job difficult for next week to decide who will make the starting 15!!

Westmeath scored 5-23 from play, an incredible scoreline with the only free coming in the 71st minute where Sam McCartan slotted it over the bar and raised the orange flag!

Our Senior men face Meath next Sunday at 2pm in Glenisk, O’Connor Park. All support needed in this Leinster Quarter Final!
