Celtic Challenge Round 3: Mayo 1-13 Westmeath 0-11
Westmeath U16 hurlers played their final group game of the Celtic Challenge last Saturday in Tooreen, taking on the Mayo minor team. The home side played with the breeze in the first half and went into the interval with a 1-7 to 0-5 lead. The Lake County men fought valiantly in the second half to close the gap but the final whistle saw the gap remain at 5 points, with Mayo winning 1-13 to 0-11. The result means Westmeath await the result of Mayo vs Roscommon to decide whether the Lake County finish 2nd or 3rd in the group. The team’s next outing in the competition will be a quarter final on Saturday 9th May.
Development Squads
The U15 hurlers will start their John Doyle and Hibernia Cup campaigns this Saturday, both facing away trips south. The John Doyle team travel to Clare to take on the Banner County in Clareabbey at 1:00, while the Hibernia Cup team travel to Portlaoise to take on Laois. Best wishes to all players and mentors.
Go Games
The programme of Go Games continued at the weekend with a series of football blitzes taking place at U8 and U10 levels on Saturday morning. Three hurling clubs had the honour of providing the half time entertainment at Saturday’s Joe McDonagh Cup game in TEG Cusack Park: Delvin (2 teams), Castlepollard and Southern Gaels. Well done to the young hurlers from each club and their mentors and many thank to Daybreak Delvin for generously providing drinks and snacks for the players.
Primary Teacher Gaelic Games Education Course
Athlone Education Centre, in conjunction with Westmeath GAA, is running a Summer Course for Primary School teachers entitled “Leading Gaelic Games in Primary Schools”. The course will take a blended learning approach, with two days in person in St. Joseph’s SS Rochfortbridge and three days online. The course will focus on developing physical literacy and movement skills, developing coaching programmes and integrating Gaelic Games into a PE Curriculum.
