Leinster Council TURAS Programme
The Leinster Council Turas Programme is running very well with 18 clubs involved to date. Garrycatle, Tubberclair, Maryland/Tang, Athlone and Caulry were the first group of clubs to take part with their three sessions now completed. This programme is laid out so as clubs have three engagements with Development Officers / Staff Members – the first a workshop to introduce the programme where clubs are clustered – followed by two sessions with individual clubs at their venue as they work with their players. The age groups being worked with in Westmeath at the moment are U8s and U10s. The second group to participate are a hurling group with Clonkill, Raharney, Delvin and Lough Lene Gaels involved. The initial workshop ran in Clonkill on May 21st with the first sessions in the clubs starting in Raharney and Delvin – both last Thursday evening. Milltownpass, St Marys Rochfortbridge, Mullingar Shamrocks and Shandonagh started their programme with a workshop in Milltownpass on May 23rd with the first club session for that group running in Rochfortbridge on June 1st. The fourth group involves Bunbrosna, St. Pauls, Ballycomoyle and Multyfarnham with that workshop taking place in Bunbrosna on May 31st – the schedule of visits to clubs is still being drawn up and will be finalised this week. Feedback has been very positive with aim to include all clubs with the programme by the end of the year.

last year so encouraging all to enter this year. Full details available via the following web link

Primary School 3rd/4th Class Blitzes
In early May close on 1,500 children took part in third / fourth class football blitzes at various venues across the county. A feature of the blitzes was that schools were mixed with three/four from a number of schools forming individual teams (9/10-a-side) and a series of mini blitzes being ran at each venue with all guaranteed three games. Referees for the games came from Transition Year courses in Post Primary Schools – this on the back of the students completing a GAA module with Development Officer James Heffernan where they covered rules and refereeing. These games allowed for practical experience of officiating at a game with all acquitting themselves very well. Thanks to Loreto Secondary School Mullingar, St. Josephs Rochfortbridge and Athlone CC who provided the referees on this occasion. And thanks to all the primary schools involved for their help and cooperation throughout the week.
